Campbell's Soup Stands Up Against Hate

Yep, soup is mmm mmm good, especially when the leading maker and American icon of soup, Campbell's stands up against the hate-mongering assholes of the ironically named American Family Association.  You see, the AFA requested that Campbell's stop advertising in the Advocate, the long-running Gay and Lesbian News Magazine.  Well, Campbell's basically told them to go fuck themselves, but somewhat more diplomatically.  Perhaps, this could be another turning point where corporate America realizes that there's more profit in inclusion than exclusion.  Suck on that, haters.

Openly Gay Athelete Wins Gold

Matthew Micham from Australis won a gold medal in diving at the Beijing Olympics and in this Olympics media event where NBC has found personal backstories so important, they did not once mention Matthew's. He is the first openly gay person to ever compete, let alone win a gold medal. Why would NBC not find this compelling?

At least in California. And the LA Times -- sadly declining under Tribune -- manages to get it right with an Editorial today. The question, the paper poses, comes down to this: "How can the state's blessing on these acts of love in any way diminish us?"

Today, at 5:01pm Pacific Time, equal marital rights came to gays and lesbians in California. And the people rejoiced. Let freedom ring.

House Passes Anti-Gay Discrimination Bill

Huzzah. If it passes the Senate, though, Bush said he'd veto it. Not only is Bush a war criminal, a war profiteer, the worst president ever, but he's in favor of discrimination. Hecukuva job, America!

Episcopal Hater

"Representatives from the Episcopal Diocese of Pittsburgh voted overwhelmingly Friday to approve constitutional amendments that are the first step in leaving the national church in a widening rift over homosexuality and interpretation of Scripture."
Come on, QUEER AS FOLK was set in Pittsburgh. Here's hoping the people of this diocese speak up for equality and freedom. Sheesh.

Marriage Equality

Unlike the San Diego Mayor, once again the Governator vetoed Marriage Equality in California. Now, is the time. Massachusetts and Canada and Spain and a host of other countries and territories have opened up Marriage to all consenting adults and the result has not been catastrophe. It's time California joined them.
Speak out, contribute, spread the word.

Equal Rights for All Californians

I've been with Carl, my partner, for 17 years. We have shared everything in good times and bad times. The only things we haven't shared are marriage vows.

Is our longstanding, stable relationship a threat to the state of California? Is it a threat to straight people in any way? Does it cause anyone or anybody in our society harm? The answer is no. And, still, we are told that we cannot marry.

For those who say it goes against God's laws, I kindly remind you that we live in a country that still separates Church and State.

So, if you are so inclined, I encourage you to stand up, speak out and be counted. Let your voice be heard and let's -- as a progressive state -- take another step toward greater equality.
